Formative blog feedback - Miss Hunter

Jaman, your blog is on track.

So far:

WWW: Your ideas are usually thoughtful and detailed. You understand the conventions of a magazine and I can see that you have used them in the preliminary task.

EBI: Some of your posts, particularly recent research, need more detail added. Your images of your target audience are actually images of pop stars - your target audience can't be Michael Jackson - he's dead! Put images of real people in your real target audience bracket.

Case Study Part 4: Double page spread 2

NME 2015

The double page spread of NME magazine consists of a lot of smaller writing on both sides of the page. from page 6-11 it says agenda on all them on both sides of the double page spread. This gives the information to the audience that the pages will be about agenda. The title agenda is placed on the left hand corner on the left page of the double spread. On the right hand side of the double page, agenda is written on the right top hand corner.

The headline have been made bold and big. The designer of the magazine has done this to make the headlines stand out so that the audience can get an idea of what the smaller text will be about before they start reading it. Knowing what the writer of the magazine intends to talk about will create a clearer message to the audience.

The pictures on the double page spread do not overlap both the pages. The pictures are placed in a systematic order. This is to keep the magazine looking professional. The main pictures of the double page spread are mid shots placed on the top of top of both the pages. The other pictures are much smaller placed in systematic and organised order.

The headlines, texts and pictures are all used together to create effect. They work together in a way which they anchor each other.

Case Study Part 4: Double Page Spread

Match Attax Magazine 2015/2016

The double page spread of this magazine is about everything the target audience needs to know about the game "match attax"

The first page of the double spread is page 8 and 9. The title of this page is called "ATTACK!" This title is made in bold and is placed on the bottom left hand corner of the magazine. This title enables people to understand that these pages will be about attack in football, also this being a card game magazine it allows the target audience to understand it will be specified about the cards. In the middle a cover line is used.

The cover line has been made big and bold and placed on the left side of the double spread. This is written in yellow and in capital letters. The use of capitals and the colour yellow adds energy to it. In small text there is a little text saying "get ready for the hurri-kane!" This makes the audience feel excited as the target audience will understand what the magazine is trying to say. Also it makes it seem like were about to find out special things about Harry Kane.

On the right side page of the double spread it says, "if you want to go all-out attack game then super Sergio is the card you need." This uses alliteration and direct audience. The alliteration makes Sergio seem really good as a match attax card due to the word super infront of it. The direct audience is giving help to the audience about how to create a good team, this is what the magazine was intitaly created for.

The photographs are spread around the double spread. This magazine uses a lot of pictures and a little bit of writing per double spread. The photographs are in the background and fill the double spread. The pictures are of the football player witch could be packed in card pack and the little writing talks about these players.

The second double spread is similar. The concept of the layout has been kept the same the only thing is that this page is about defence.

This continues until page 18. The layout of all pages until page 18 has been kept very similar to keep it consistent.

After page 18 which continues up on till page 28 is just poster of football teams. This done by half a spread of the double spread with one team taking one half of the a4 page and the other team taking up the other half. these pages engage readers with it's visual presence.

Inside the magazine, about half way the designer of the magazine included a puzzle zone booklet. This allows the audience to interact with the magazine and have something to enjoy.

The final page of the magazine is called 'laugh'. This has been put in to this magazine to end with allowing the audience to have something to laugh about. This magazine has been created for the promotion of the match attax game but having laugh page witch is in context of football but out of context of match attax allows audience to enjoy the magazine further.

Case Study Part 3: Contents Page

Match Attax Magazine 2015/2016

The contents page of this magazine has been kept very simple by laying out the information of what will be inside the magazine on a orderly fashion on one side. The contents page justify s what the magazine will talk about from one page to the next. The designer of the magazine categorized the different key areas to talk about and used more than one page to talk about them in each of the category.

This contents page uses a a range of pictures, these pictures take up 3/4 of the page. 1/4 has been used to lay out the text. The pictures are in context and show briefly what will be on a certain page for example page 14 has been placed on the contents page to give the audience a preview of what they will be seeing.

The categories titles have been made bold to create a meaning. The use of bold writing for the categories make them seem important.

The colour used for the writing of the categories is white in a blue rectangular kind of box. The white writing inside the blue box creates a visual effect and allows the writing to stand out.

The page numbers are in yellow. The use of the colour yellow creates attention due to the brightness of the colour.

The language used for the categories short and simple. They are one word sentences which keeps the categories short. The use of these categorize works as they sum up the the pages. the audience know what to expect inside.

Case Study Part 2: Front Cover

Match Attax Magazine 2015/2016

The main image of this magazine is an image of three football players, this is a mid shot of them. They are Harry Kane, Philippe Coutinho and Juan Mata. This image has been used to show the mixing between the clubs as the players on the front cover are all from different clubs.

The title of the magazine is called 'Match Attax'. This title is effective to it's target audience, people who read the magazine will be engaged with the title as the title rings attention to the card game which this magazine is about. The use of the colour red and blue on the title of the magazine makes the title stand out, also red and blue is the primary colours of football. The fact this magazine is about football creates a added attention of perhaps why the colour red and blue was used in the title.

The main cover line says "collectors Guide" this has been kept short and simple witch allows the audience to understand what the magazine will be about. Other cover lines have been used to promote the magazine, " GOLD, SILVER OR BRONZE LIMITED EDITION CARD WITH EVERY ISSUE" This cover line was made in capital letters so that it stands out. The designer of the magazine made the words "limited edition" in bold as well as the capital letters, the designer done this as he/she wants the audience to see this and want to buy the magazine so they can get the "limited edition" cards.

The text has been kept formal to insure a clear message is being sent. This is a mini magazine explaining the game, so the designer of the magazine tries to keep the text formal to deliver the message explaining the game.

The price of the magazine is £3.50, this above average as the average price of a magazine is £3. This gives a sense that this is a quality magazine. The addition of the cards in the magazine may have been used to pull up the price of the magazine.

Case Study Part 1: Colour in Magazine

Match Attax Magazine 2015/2016

This magazine uses so many colours, some people would say having more than 4 colours makes a magazine look very busy. However this magazine uses a range of bright colours which work well together and is able to appeal to it's audience.

The main colours used in the magazine is blue, yellow, white and red, Even though other colours have been used, these are the main ones which stand out.

Blue: .The colour blue is a colour that represents seas and the sky.

Yellow: The colour yellow is a colour of energy and brightness.

Red: The colour red is a colour that makes people think about love and blood.

White The colour white is a plane colour which represents nothing.

Blue: The colour blue in this magazine is used as the background colour to set the magazine alive. The colour blue is a colour which is very bright and can make a range of different colors on top of it stand out.

Yellow: The colour yellow shows energy and shows that magazine is full of energy. The brightness of the yellow on the writing shows the energy.

The colour red shows power which attracts the audience. People are more into people with power than without power.

The colour white is colour without a colour and has been used for the writing.

The designer of the magazine uses the same colors throughout the magazine to make it consistent. Consistency is important as it makes the magazine look professional.

Colours In Magazine

The colors I will be mainly using in the magazine will consist of 4 colors. They are white, red, brown and black.

White: The colour white is a colour which shows nothing.

Red: The colour red is the colour of love and blood.

Brown: The colour brown is a colour that shows woods and nature.

Black: The colour black shows power and mystery.

Color codes

I have chosen these colors as I believe these colors will be effective in the promotion of my magazine.

The colour white will allow me to show goodness. I want to use this in the picture as I want to show the school is full of goodness.

The colour red will be used for the text. I have chosen this color for the text as it will stand on the background color that I will be using.

The color brown will be used as a background shadow. I want to do this as it will make everything on the page stand out.

The color black will be used as my main cover lines. I want to do this as black is a color of power and I want the main cover line to be the most powerful thing on the page.

Max Payne 3

The colours used in the magazine has been made using dark colours to enhance the main image used.

The cover lines have been made white, this has been done to allow the audience to clearly read the text. If the text was not clear and didn't stand out on the page, the audience will struggle to read it.

For this type of magazine I will say that the use of colours has been used effectively as it attracts the audience with it's visual presence.

Analysis Of Magazine Language

How do magazines use language to target their audience?

NME

The language used in the NME magazine is highly important to the promotion of the magazine. This magazine uses a range of different language techniques to appeal to the target audience.

Firstly, the writer of this magazine uses factual information, " top 50" having facts in the magazine is important to target its audience as it allows the audience as facts and statistics make information more reliable. The fact that this magazine uses facts and statistic is good because this is a music magazine and having "top  50" in it will allow the audience to see the accomplishment.

The writer of this magazine uses a lot of detail when describing things, " double six, singing to the label to release their forthcoming self-titled debut album on January 5." Using detailed language allows the audience to clearly understand what is going on. The writer also used a date in this detailed description. The writer does this because he/she wants the audience to understand what is going on in this date.

Finally, the writer uses language to appeal to it's target audience is by using direct audience, such as rhetorical questions. " it's just strange as fuck, you know?" This language used is informal. The writer uses a swear word with informal language to suit it's target audience. Having the magazine formal will not appeal to the target audience. The fact that it is used in the magazine makes it clear that it is directed at young adults.

Preliminary Editors Letter

 Folly And Read

The editor’s letter of Folly and read sounds like the writer of the editors letter is trying to promote the magazine by talking good about it. This is shown when he/she says “it’s the best of our current collection.” The editor does this to make the target audience feel engaged. It makes readers want to find out what makes this magazine better than the issues that were made before. The fans of the magazine would have read the issues before so if they are being told this is the best one yet they will surly buy it.

The writer also uses direct audience to make the readers feel like they need the magazine, “we worked hard to put the magazine in your hands.” The fact the writer says this shows how much they want to be a friend to the audience by pleasing them with the latest best magazine. This also shows the amount of care that they have for their audience as they spent a lot of time trying to perfect the magazine.

The writer ends the editors letter by saying they hope that we enjoy this issue of the magazine. This makes us as the readers feel grateful that they spend so much time on us and all they want is for us to enjoy it.

Troughout this editors letter the writer acts like a helpful friend to the audience. This is good as the readers will feel grateful as I mentioned above.

Savior Flair

The writer of this editors letter tells the readers how " we love the month of august." This makes the audience feel engaged and want to find out why the at savior flair they enjoy the month of august and not as much the other months of the year.

The writer then goes on to say "we will be showing you a sneak peek of everything you need to know." This is a good way to promote the magazine as, if people know a few bits of what will be inside they may get fascinated.

The writer uses direct audience to talk to the readers, "you" this makes the audience feel like the magazine is for them.

The writer ends this editors letter by saying, " as I sign off, I'd like to wish you all a very enjoyable few weeks of summer." Saying this out of contexts of about the magazines shows that the writer of this magazine is a caring person about peoples lives. The fact that the writer does this may make the audience feel happy.
